In this class we will listen to all kinds of music from Beach Boys to Billie Eilish, from Brahms to the Beastie Boys, from Puerto Rican Salsa to Oklahoman Western Swing! We will critically listen to musical form, instrumentation, recording techniques, lyrics, and emotional elements. We will discuss the music’s background and historical situation which led to its creation. A focus will be to compare different songs, genres, and artists and to discover what makes them the same and different. We will find that the student doesn’t have to “like” all music they hear but will find ways to respect all music for the art that it is, and while exploring the historical and cultural era in which informs it.
