Presentation, Defense and Debate

PRESENTATION & DEFENSE: THE GREAT DEBATES
Logic is commonly understood to mean “thought” or “reason,” but its roots are in the Greek word logos meaning “word.”  In this class, we will apply logic to develop and present persuasive structured arguments and defend points and ideas through presentation and debate.  Students will thoroughly explore and investigate how to research, how to analyze an argument, how to construct a presentation, how to present and structure a debate, and how to effectively present research.  Each class will provide opportunities for students to practice debating and presenting, some without the pressure of competition, and some that will be evaluated on a point system. Many topics will be examined along the way, covering a variety of subjects such as everything from the making and enforcement of laws, to the ethics of artificial intelligence, to the question of Mac or PC superiority? Taught by teachers who are multi-talented and experienced in debate, presentation, science, game design and improv.
PRESENTATION & DEFENSE: THE GREAT SCIENCE DEBATES
Knowing how to give a good presentation or how to articulate ideas well is important in any field. However, many students in the sciences (and even professional scientists) do not do well in situations where they have to defend their ideas. In this class, students will learn how to defend scientific theories, debate scientific hypothesis, and argue effectively.  Students will simultaneously learn concepts from all branches of science. By the end of these classes, students will have improved or enhanced presentation skills, be able to defend theories using critical thinking, and ultimately, how to make a brilliant scientific argument.
This class is being taught by a teacher who’s love of science is infectious, he has been educated within our own community, and is now well on his way to becoming a theoretical physicist.
