Homeschooling at Home with The ROC

The ROC is now offering classes directly to your home through your own computer, both One on One classes that you schedule according to your schedule or Group classes happening at The ROC on their current schedule.All of the following classes are now available for video conferencing:

SCHEDULE ONE ON ONE CLASSES TUESDAYS – THURSDAYS with one of The ROC’s teachers at your own preferred day and time.
The following roster of classes is available for this program, more are being added, and please let us know if there are any subjects you’d like to request!

Math for Ages 6-10, $80 per hour (sliding scale may be possible)
Beginning with a thorough assessment of current math skills, the student’s biggest mathematical obstacles will be tackled by using games and engaging methods whenever possible culminating with the goals of improving skills as well turning math into an enjoyable activity for the student.

Math for Ages 9-17, $100 per hour (sliding scale may be possible)
Using stories, games and puzzles, hands-on projects, pictures, discussions, journal writings, etc, and incorporating the Multi-Modality philosophy of teaching through cross-conversations of the same concept, the class will address different ways students learn –  pictures for visual learners, hands-on for tactile learners etc. –  in order to help each student discover and enhance their own best methods for approaching mathematics.

Math for Teens: Regent’s and general Test Prep, $40 per hour (sliding scale may be possible)
Students learn both the mathematics, as well as experience the favorite common themes of most standardized tests. Incorporating the Multi-Modality philosophy of teaching mathematics through cross-conversations of the same concept, the class will address different ways  individual students learn in order to help each student discover and enhance their own best methods for approaching tests.

Ukulele Lessons for Ages 7 – Adult, $80 per hour, $50 for 30 minutes
The Ukulele is one of the world’s most popular and most fun instruments to play!   Also, easy to learn, students will be able to play songs by the end of their first lesson.  Students will to learn to sing and strum their favorite songs, read sheet music, and compose original material.

Flute Lessons for Ages 9 – Adult, $80 per hour, $50 for 30 minutes
Technique learned on the flute can transfer well to both brass and woodwind instruments. Students will be led through technical exercises, and learn skills for reading sheet music, finger movement, breathing, sound quality and overall body control as they practice both classical and jazz pieces.

Clarinet Lessons for Ages 9 – Adult, $80 per hour, $50 for 30 minutes
The clarinet is one of the few instruments that is just as at home in classical as well as jazz settings.  An excellent introduction to the saxophone, and good for small hands.  In this class, students will learn how to play the clarinet, how to play songs by reading sheet music, and how to improvise beyond the sheet.

Saxophone Lessons for Ages 9 – Adult, $80 per hour, $50 for 30 minutes
Typical lessons include technical exercises – playing scales, articulation, clapping rhythms, ear training games, sheet music study, etc.  Students will learn to play all types of music from classical to pop, as well as learn how to improvise.

Guitar Lessons for Ages 9 – Adult, $80 per hour, $50 for 30 minutes
Jam on with the school of ROC(k)!  Beginners to advanced.  Tailored to individual students’ interests, the goal is for students to be able to read sheet music, sing and strum their favorite songs, write songs, and compose original material.

Reader’s Workshop for Ages 7-11, $80 per hour (sliding scale may be possible)
Beginning with a comprehensive reading assessment to accurately gauge students’ reading level, the goal of the program is to create a life-long love of reading by assigning readings that are relevant to students’  lives and interests as well as their level.  Each session consists of reading aloud. vocabulary development and customized reading strategies.

Writer’s Workshop for Ages 7-12, $100 per hour (sliding scale may be possible)
Similar to our on-site Writer’s Workshop, but with more time for focused individual attention.  Can be used as a companion to the group class, prep for joining a group class, or just great on it’s own.  With the focus being on the practical practice of writing itself, student’s individual interests and passions inform the writing topics, and all kinds of genre can be explored – short stories, plays, scripts, essays, op-ed pieces, research reports, poetry, letter writing, speeches, comics, lyrics, etc.   Perfect for all types of writers – struggling, or those who find writing boring or irrelevant, to advanced writers as well as those who already love to write.

Participate in a class at The ROC from your home computer.  Check the current schedule, sign up now to join us live when the classes are happening!  Available for most classes currently in the schedule, including but not limited to:

JAPANESE, Beginner and Intermediate, 10 weeks, $210
This class will focus on conversation and daily life: introductions, household/everyday objects, going around town, pets and family life, hobbies, meals, addresses, and so on.  Written Japanese will be introduced, and students will also learn fundamental vocabulary, grammar, as well as study the hiragana and katakana. verb forms, conjugate adjectives, and more.

COLLEGE PREP WRITING: How to Write for College, 10 weeks, $250
This class will teach students how to craft strong, analytical, argument-driven essays that that are incisive, thoughtful and powerful.  It’s never too early for teens to learn about writing for college (or career based endeavors), and this class will teach students how to “wow” their college professors!

COMPUTER CODING, 10 weeks, $230
Learn core skills and technologies of web development including HTML, CSS, and Processing.  Each student will learn to build their own websites and video games.
