THE ETHICS OF PHARMACY
This class serves as an introduction to the Pharmacy Tech Program offered at The ROC.  This class will explore the science of various drug classes as well as situations that might present ethical questions for technicians.  Primarily using Autism and ADD/ADHD class of drugs as examples, we will discuss the drug development, mechanisms for action for these drug classes and the ethical questions involved in their prescribing.  We will also cover the Code of Ethics for Pharmacy Technicians and use the time to create our own code. Taught by a Ph.D. professor with extensive academic and consulting experience.

 

THE SCIENCE OF MEDICATION
Nowadays we live in a media culture in which many of the top selling drug names (Allegra, Cymbalta and Nexium, etc…) are common knowledge.  But, not many of us know the history of all these medications, the interesting ways of how they were developed (some still from things like snake venom!) or discovered; fascinating stories of their original intended uses (drugs now commonly prescribed for focus were re-purposed from WWII weight loss class), and, of course, the exact science of how each of them work in conjunction with human physiology.

This introductory class for teens and adults will teach the top 200 drugs and the foundations of drug development.  An understanding of the top 200 drugs is one of the first steps for students interested in taking the test to become a certified pharmacy technician.  Pharmacy technicians work part-time and full time  in drug stores, hospitals and nursing homes. We will discuss the basic steps of drug development and cover beta and alpha receptor blockers, ACE inhibitors, ADHD, allergy and Alzheimer classes of drugs, and more.

Dr. Houston Pichardo’s academic experience has included post-doctoral, research and teaching positions at New York Medical College, Bronx Community College, Manhattan College, and Columbia University. In addition, she has held consulting positions with corporations and non profits regarding clinical research, and innovation projects involving science, medicine and technology investments.
