Event Description:

Educating Our Kids: How, What, and Why?

Round out your 2014-2015 school year with a close look at education and learning in our world today.  Many families are faced with daunting questions about our current educational system which was created a century ago, and the multitude of options offering solutions is just as mystifying.

We will closely investigate these issues in a year-long exploration of the present and future of our children’s education starting with our Educating Our Kids: How, What, and Why? Discussion and Workshop based on Sir Ken Robinson’s groundbreaking analysis outlining the core issues and choices.  Together we will learn, overview and review options, and help each other navigate and organize choices.  Over the course of the year, we will take a closer look at each option separately, showing dynamic films, detailing issues and real examples of how specific solutions are currently functioning.  Our panels will comprise of diverse groups of parents coming to the topic of education from various perspectives, yet all finding themselves at similar points of query when it comes to education.

The entire series will be hosted by Rhonda Ross.  Rhonda headlined President Obama’s 2nd Inaugural Ball, and has performed to standing ovations and rave reviews at The Hollywood Bowl, The Montreal International Jazz Festival,  Wolf Trap, The Theater at Madison Square Garden and more.  As a singer-songwriter, Rhonda’s shows have consistently been reviewed as uplifting and captivating as her voice immediately strikes a chord with music lovers and her refreshingly authentic performance set her apart from other vocalists.  Rhonda has the entire package — as an entertainer, as a poet, and as a human being and has great, great, great power on the stage.  Her show and her music flow straight from her essence and her bright spirit fills the entire room.  Her happiness on the stage is contagious.  As the only child of Diana Ross and Motown Founder Berry Gordy, it has become evident that Rhonda not only has the talent, but the significance to carry on her parents’ legacy, all the while establishing her own unique musical destination.  And, yet as a mother to a young son, this superstar faces the same challenges navigating today’s education system that we do.  It’s clear Rhonda’s resources allow her reach and access to the world’s best education for her son, yet she faces the same issues we do and she is excited to work together with us as we navigate resources and explore solutions.

The ROC has been serving hundreds of children and families’ academic as well as life and career goals, and responding to the changing face of education, learning, technology and the culture for 9 years.  The ROC’s Network for Learning coordinates and connects students and families with teachers, curriculum, programs, professionals, and businesses to create independent, customized learning opportunities, and help families navigate resources here in NYC and all over the world through on-site, satellite and virtual classes, Portfolio Development, Internship, Mentoring,  and Certifications such as The ROC’s Pharmacy Tech Program.  The ROC also serves as a beacon and gateway for new homeschoolers.

The June 11th event will serve as our series Film & Discussion Kickoff Fundraiser to raise funds to fully execute the series, and also to benefit families in need of The ROC’s Scholarship program.  The majority of our funding is generated through, and therefore is reliant on class enrollment, as well as every family’s ability to afford and pay class fees.  Currently, our Summer Camp and Pharmacy Tech programs are filling up with vibrant, motivated enthusiastic students, but several come from families who are unable to pay the necessary teacher, equipment, or materials fees so the programs are in jeopardy of not being able to run.

We have a goal of raising $25,000 to execute our important Film & Discussion series, run our Summer Program with fully funded need-based Scholarships, and begin fully equipping our Pharmacy Tech Program to be able to fully certify Pharmacy Techs, with our first two classes certifying as early as January 2016.
